Collaboration in Action: Osborn Summer Academy

Shannon Mann
Carlos Ardon and Shannon Mann of the Osborn School District presented information about Osborn School District’s Summer Academy Program.  Over the past 10 years, this program has evolved and now leverages district relationships with valued partners like Teach For America and Arizona State University.

Eleven classrooms are taught by Teach For America members and mentored by Osborn faculty associates.  Five are taught by Arizona State University iTeach interns and mentored by Osborn mentors and four are taught by Osborn summer school teachers.  Many support staff members are also involved in the program including an office clerk, library clerk, health technician, cafeteria staff, maintenance staff and transportation staff. Title I and III funding support the salary for this all-star summer school team.

Osborn summer academy program ensures that all children are provided similar experiences to neighboring districts. Students attend six hours per day for twenty days along with a two hour after school program,  supported by a 21st Century Learning Grant.  Summer academy offerings include an academic intervention hour, field trips, literacy time, mathematics, science, and special areas (art, music, technology, physical education, and Native American culture.)  Each class also picked a community service project to support character development.  Additionally, parents are supported at summer academy and can attend sessions in nutrition and fitness, language acquisition, financial literacy, and technology.  At the conclusion of the program, each classroom participates in an end-of -summer showcase where students share and celebrate their learning.

Benefits of the academy include reduced language and academic loss, increased parent satisfaction, increased opportunity for teacher candidates, opportunity for teacher leaders to practice their skills, continuing services for students and families, and cross district collaboration and networking.
